Air Fryer Size Guide: How Many Quarts Do You Need?
Last updated: October 7, 2026
Air fryer capacity is listed in quarts (qt). The right size depends mostly on how many people you cook for, and whether you want to cook a whole meal at once or just sides and snacks.
Size by household
- 2–3 quarts: one or two people, snacks and sides, small kitchens.
- 4–6 quarts: the most popular range, good for about 2–4 people.
- 7 quarts and up, or a dual-basket model: families of four or more, whole chickens, or cooking a main and a side at the same time.
Food cooks best in a single layer, so a bigger basket helps more than it seems. If you're between two sizes, the larger one is usually the safer choice, as long as it fits your counter.
Basket, dual basket or oven style?
- Single basket: the simplest and usually the cheapest. Shake the basket halfway for even cooking.
- Dual basket: two separate drawers with their own settings, so two foods can finish at the same time.
- Oven style: a door and racks instead of a drawer. More capacity and can toast or bake, but takes more counter space and is harder to clean.
Other things to check
- Wattage: most air fryers use about 1,200–1,800 watts. Larger models draw more, so avoid running them on the same circuit as a kettle or microwave.
- Footprint: measure your counter and the space under your cabinets; leave room for hot air to vent at the back.
- Dishwasher-safe basket and crisper plate make cleanup much easier.
- Presets are handy but not essential; temperature and time controls are what matter.
